Taken Down in Evidence

Something you may not know about me yet is my love for finding old books by chance about the place. My heart just goes out to the little forgotten gems, especially if they're picture books cause I'm lazy like that.

Taken Down in Evidence by Leo Regan just so happened to stumble past me the other day. It's a series of images and interview that delve into the daily working lives of the Irish Garda circa 1995...

To me this book represents what photography should be. Not posed perfections but snippets of life frozen in time. Leo Regan spent eighteen months with the Gardai in three different locations.

A garda entertains local children while his partner deals with a dispute between neighbors.

'stay away from my tyres!' Children collect tyres for a Halloween bonfire. Garda responding to a suspected burglary call, have no interest in the tyres.
A particular favorite quote of mine from the book?
" A detective told me that he felt the public had a sneaking regard for the criminal- a particular Irish appreciation for the underdog, a romantic notion of someone struggling against the odds."
